Improvement results obtained from those who were orphans are as follows; 39% in communication, 50% in interaction, 52% public speaking, 30% in persuasion, 62% active listening, while 63% were still shy. Some of these external factors include; nature of the family, the culture and beliefs in the community and also the schools that the children attend (Educational experience) (Kılıç & Güngör Aytar, 2017). Nature of the family There are numerous types of families, for example; nuclear, extended, single parent and even blended families. Children in most cases draw love and even security from the people they feel attached to, which more often than not, are their family members. Socialization in children usually occurs through interactions amongst the children with their siblings, parents and also with other relatives (Jyoti, Frongillo, & Jones, 2005). When a child experiences the ultimate security and love from the parent, it is usually very easy for them to reach out and even blend in with other people of the society.

This ‘way of life', usually affects the development of social skills in children to a greater extent. For instance, children brought up violent communities tend to be timider and withdrawn most of the time. Also for children who are exposed to gang violence and even domestic abuse usually experience insecurity which in turn affects their socialization (Morgan, Shaw, & Olino, 2012). Children who are exposed to violence at any given point of their lives, usually express themselves differently as compared to other children who have never been in a similar situation. These children are mostly, withdrawn, irritable and at times, some of them may act out. (Kılıç & Güngör Aytar, 2017). Background research Importance of the topic Psychology related medical cases and their negative effects are on massive rise worldwide from the immediate past and there seems there is a greater link between the environment factors and the various psychological disorders.

Social skills are important in everyday life of an individual. It is required for adaptability and also interaction with people. Through this, people are able to form good relationships with one another and this is healthy. Social skills are important during individual functioning and social adjustments. Kılıç and Güngör Aytar (2017) defined social skills as social behaviors that enable an individual appropriately deal with interpersonal situations demands. Benedan, Powell, Zajac, Lum, and Snow (2018) defined social skills as a behavior taught and learnt by students that facilitate their interaction with other individuals during day to day activities and eventually eliciting positive responses while preventing negative responses. Lack of social skills is dangerous because this hinders adaptative ability as well as social functioning of individuals.

This has an impairment effect on social interactions which eventually affects performance. From the results obtained, those who took part in such programs had a substantial improvement in both bonding with friends and their self-perceptions. They also showed reduced problem behaviors, improved school grades, and good social behaviors. One important finding is that, if the program contains the right components that promote social and personal skills development, then, it will improve an individual’s social skill. According to research, socialization when young tends to influence pro-social behavior and individuals’ internalizing problems, although, just a few research have highlighted that negative emotionality can control such link. In a study done by Morgan, Shaw, and Olino, (2012), it analyzed if negative emotionality (NE) can moderate socialization skills of children in schools.

A likert-type scale was used to measure the attitude of the participants (Counsell & Cribbie, 2017). The scale had 5 options of; strongly disagree, disagree, neither agree nor disagree, agree, and strongly agree. Two groups were identified under parenting; those raised by single parents and those raise by both parents. The participants were given several questions which target social skills and then given statements in which they were instructed to agree or disagree. These questions targeted and measured specific areas under social skills; communication, interaction, shyness, public speaking, persuasion, and active listening Procedures Between 1/2/2017 and 1/3/2018, individuals who met the inclusion criterion were selected and given identification numbers. Results obtained from the responses of participants who were offered are as follows; 39% communication, 50% interaction, 63% shyness, 52% public speaking, 30% persuasion, and 62% active listening.

This shows that participants who had parents had a relative high score in characteristics that encompass social skills according to results from table 1 while those who were orphans had relatively low scores. Parenting is a pillar in an individual’s social skills, especially, good parenting. Children who grow up without their parents’ direction or under poor direction from their guardians, mostly have problems with their social skills. Some will decide to go into a cocoon and avoid the public so as to hide their problems while others will end up crying alone in a hidden place if they are mistreated at home or are neglected.
