CLABSI in ICU Setting

Most western countries have well-established bundle care that is highly concerned with CLABSI, but that has never been an ultimate solution to all the cases (Latif, Halim & Pronovost, 2018). This has also necessitated the invention of Central venous catheter (CVCs) which has been widely applied in the field of modern medicine. However, implementation of any strategy that can help in the prevention of CLABSI requires that each institution assess its situation before deciding on the best programme possible. A research done in Latin America and largely Europe by International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortium indicated a CLABSI rate of 6. 1/1000 from the study undertaken for six years from January 2007 (Rupp et al. It is meant to reduce the stay for those who are infected to stay in the hospital.

Currently, the infection causes a patient to spend an extra of about 24 days in the hospital. If the proposal is implemented, this could reduce up to about seven days (Parra et al. In return, the patients’ bills would have reduced significantly. It is also aimed at making sure that patients can give space to others who need the space in the ICU. The elements which are necessary for its success include using sterile gowns, large body drape on the patient among others (Parra et al. Literature search strategy employed The literature was systematically searched by the use of a combination of relevant search terms. The terms used include CLABSI rates, catheter-related infections, prevention and control of infections in the ICU, quality of health care, infection control, central venous/adverse effects, catheterization among many more (Rupp et al.

Other information was gathered through reference lists. Ovid and science direct databases were a source of extra information that was necessary. The observation was further made even after the intervention period. This is necessary to collect more adequate data. Applicable change or nursing theory utilized For supportive frameworks that are needed by the patients, nursing theories play an important role when training the nurses. One of the theories that have been the most important for me in this research proposal is the self-care nursing theory. This theory has focused on the role the nurses are playing in supporting the patients so that they can have the ability to take care of their own. This will involve the mentors spreading the information further to the others located at different places in the continent, country or state.

As a result, there will be an increased community awareness of the matter (Rupp et al. People will be willing to adopt the CVC as a solution to minimize the risk of CLABSI. Identification of potential barriers to plan implementation and how to overcome Some of the barriers that could hinder the implementation of this proposal include: lack of problem awareness by the nurses working in the ICU, low self-efficiency to the workers, and lack of resources to spearhead the implementation, inability to change practice and poor familiarity or disagreement with the guidelines (Klintworth, et al. These barriers need special attention to overcome them each one at a time. C. , Rogers, M. A. , Maki, D. G. lww. com/nursing/Fulltext/2012/06000/Preventing_central_line_associated_bloodstream.
