Contextual factors can greatly influence the teaching and learning process in a classroom. Teachers should take into consideration these factors and student characteristics before they can start teaching. A comprehensive understanding of a student can help a teacher in designing best teaching activities that will help the student. These contextual factors include student characteristics, surrounding community, classrooms dynamics as well as school environment. According to Arora & Stoner (1996), a teacher should ensure that all these factors are taken into consideration to enable them to meet students’ need. For the learning or teaching to be efficient and effective, classrooms should always be safe for students and all conditions within the classroom including chairs and desks should be in good condition so students can have least or no destructions.

Additionally, classroom materials should always be readily available and easy to access to minimize time wastage (Martínez, et al. Other factors such as students’ characteristics may also affect teaching and learning process considering the fact that students may have many issues to deal with which can affect the learning and teaching process. Today, many classrooms are multiculturally making it important for teachers to understand various cultural differences in various classrooms, an aspect that can be facilitated by getting close to their students. Some students may have special needs to attend to. School calendar and holiday structures in Alberta traditionally start from September to June. Students are likely to find the learning process friendly and welcoming when they feel safe and secure. Another reason why teachers should respect the rights and dignity of students is that they are role models to students and are likely to be emulated thus bringing in the necessity of acting as examples to the juniors. Approaches to Teaching and Learning There are various approaches to teaching and learning which include; the use of hip-hop, the process-oriented by guided inquiry lesson, project-based learning, and flipped classroom and reality pedagogy. Hip-hop education is an approach to teaching that has several advantages. Hip-hop approach helps to create a favorable context for learning and teaching of young people. By exploring them, students can develop a solution to various real-life issues. In this approach, the main function of a teacher is to engage students who are disinterested in learning to allow them to be able to identify real life and community issues that they want to solve. Also, it provides students and teachers with various opportunities to be creative. Other approaches for teaching and learning include reality pedagogy approach for teaching and learning which mostly focuses on teachers being able to gain an understanding of the realities of the students and be able to use such information as the point for instructions (Gibb & Coffey, 2004).
