Every person must try and understand other people's generations (Walker, 2016). A generational gap comes up among children and their parents or children and their grandparents. This essay discusses how a child, Dee, and her mother seem to disagree without the knowledge that it is the generational gap that brings the problem. The first view is by Dee who is much younger. The girl is described as being fashionable, and this was observed from the time she was young. Dee continues to talk of how the quilts were priceless and that Maggie will use them and five years' time they would be turned rugs. It's ironical that the mother remembers how she had given the quilts to Dee when she was going to college but she said they were old-fashioned.

Dee ends up confessing to her mum that she would hung the quilts if she would be given the quilts. The other object is the butter dish which was owned by Grandma Dee. She noted the churn and the dasher as well. The mother reminds them how the quilts were stitched by hand. All along, Mama has been keeping the quilts for Maggie to give her when she marries her husband. The evidence of how Mama valued the objects is noted from the fact that the quilts were already in use (Walker, 2016). The other objects including the butter dish, churn, and dasher was being used in the kitchen. As per Mama, valuing the objects could be seen through using the objects.

This implies that children have a chance to voice in their opinions in cases of crisis or conflicts at home (Jou & Endo, 2016). This is seen where Dee voices out her interest and her views on how heritage by her mum should be shared. This is contrary to the earlier time where children had no option of questioning why and how a decision has been reached on. The other relevance of this story is how parents get children who have different character and beliefs. It's normal to find a house with a pastor, and the same house has a thief. This should not be the case as no one has ever been given a chance to choose where he/she will live when he/she is born.

It's therefor good for everyone to appreciate his/her background. An example in this story is where Maggie and mother discuss how Dee swears never to invite her friends to see her home. It's common in today's world that once parents take their children to school most of them tend to change how their parents do things. They tend to educate them on how to deal with certain issues which normally their parents know how they go (Jou &Endo, 2016). In the same way, in the story here, we see hoe Dee has different opinions from those of her mama. Children should learn to respect their parents even after receiving the education. Whether parents are learned or not they should get respect since they have more experience in life.
