Dope 2015 Film Analysis
The analysis of Dope (2015) shall bring out a clear understanding of the different aspects that are in use in this film, which make it a success. The Theme The theme of this film talks about drug dealing, a habit that is getting into a group of high school friends. They are led by Malcolm who wants to attain success in his education by joining Harvard University and the same time remain to their drug dealing habits. This theme develops further in the movie when Malcolm finally attends a party where he finds a local drug dealer by the name Dom. Malcolm and this drug dealer are the two characters that develop the theme of selling drugs as many of the activities revolve around them. This is evident in the movie at some point when he introduces himself and says that “I am a straight A student” and this is a clear indication that he has belief in his abilities.
Jib and Diggy are persuasive as it is evident that at first Malcolm dismisses the idea of them attending Dom’s birthday party knowing very well that he is a drug dealer, but the two friends are able to convince him that they should actually go to the party. Dom, on the other hand, is of a rigid character because he still has the nerve to tell Malcolm to take that drugs and gun he finds in his backpack at a certain location. It is important to remember that Dom himself puts these items in Malcolm’s bag and, therefore, it sounds rude to again ask for them bearing in mind that Dom disregards the idea that the police can apprehend Malcolm if they get a hold of his backpack. Jacoby portrays a dishonest character and this is evident when Malcolm walks into his office.
Tone Tone refers to the general attitude a narrator has towards the characters acting a movie. The tone of the film Dope (2015) keeps changing throughout the entire movie. At the beginning of the film, the narrator’s attitude towards the actors is a positive one. The description of how Malcolm is very ambitious of joining Harvard University even though his adviser does not think he can; is very evident that the mood of the movie at the start is perfect. However, as the development of the theme proceeds, the tone changes and there comes in a negative attitude. People at the nightclub attend the party dressing t-shirts and casual trousers together with caps on their heads. A good number of the men in Dom’s party show up wearing shiny necklaces.
It is also important to note that a majority of the people in attendance wear black outfits. Cinematography Cinematography refers to the art of using camerawork and photography when making a film (Brown, 2016 p. Dope (2015) has its images showing a good sense of cinematography. There are many occasions when dialogue takes place in this movie. A good example is when Malcolm and his friends get to Dom’s party. They engage in a conversation that aims at clarifying the meaning of a slippery slope. There is also plenty of movements during the birthday party. This implies that the actors are handling their roles accordingly. The viewers can hear the utterances of the performers and this is a clear indication that the film is perfect on matters to do with sound. The non-diegetic sounds are also present and a good example is with the narrator’s voice.
There are several occasions when the narrator talks about Malcolm’s experiences. There is also the background mood music that plays in most of the scenes throughout the film and this represents the non-diegetic sound because it is not the actual sound at any scene and, therefore, this means that there is no implication of this sound in the present action of a scene or it does not appear completely (Barsam & Monahan, 2015 p. Conclusion The movie Dope (2015) is vital in the explanation of the theme of drug dealing amongst Malcolm and his friends. Production Design for Screen: Visual Storytelling in Film and Television.
