Lee has been living as a housewife for most of her marital life. Her husband is a former civil servant and currently lives on a pension. Their life in Korea is quite well off economically. They have three children and two grandchildren. They are all financially independent and live in Seoul. Lee. Related Researches It is evident that socioeconomic status is important for predicting one’s life satisfaction (Whitbourne, Whitbourne, & Konnert, 2015). It has been presumed to be a strong predictor of life satisfaction because it affects the lifestyle of the elderly by supporting social activities, health condition, emotional states, and so on. While interviewing Ms. Lee, she agreed that social activity is a very important part of her life and it is undoubtedly backed by stable assets that her family had accumulated.

In addition, changes in financial assets were expected to help people enhance or sustain their life satisfaction whereas growth in other types of assets were expected to increase or promote life satisfaction (Han & Hong, 2011). The assets belonging to Ms. Lee and her family are categorized average with regards to Korean households’ wealth, which are presumed to be strong predictors of life satisfaction. Ms. Lee believes that her family worked hard to save money for their lives after retirement and the efforts are paying off now. Lee clearly stated that she is more dependent on assets than income. In this case, consideration of her personality, cultural backgrounds, and other factors, reveals that the size of her assets has a greater impact on her satisfaction in life.

Although the size of actual assets matters a lot, perceived economic status also plays an important role when it comes to predicting one’s life satisfaction (Ng, Tey, & Asadullah, 2017). A longitudinal study conducted in China from 2011 to 2012 shows the extent of how the elderly’s perception of their economic status affects their life satisfaction. The study focused on 6,530 people whose ages were above 80 years. Lee's high perception of her socioeconomic status possibly correlated with her satisfaction in life. Reflection As the studies suggest, Ms. Lee’s socioeconomic status is positively correlated with her life satisfaction. Different studies that focused on whether income affects life satisfaction resulted in different outcomes. One study has shown that it is important for how individuals perceive the wealth relative to their neighbors’ to predict their life satisfaction.

In her case, her positive personality or stable emotional state may have been suitable for achieving frivolous affluence. In a biological view, studies show that the length of the telomere is also related to one’s financial stability, indicating a predisposition of a person is not an ignorable factor in respect to life satisfaction (Whitbourne, Whitbourne, & Konnert, 2015). In this sense, there are many different and complex ways in which stable finances affect the satisfaction of life that we cannot conclude with one result. Thus, we must carefully when approaching the conclusion that higher socioeconomic status may result in a better life. During the interview, I realized once again that I couldn't explain a person's life based on just one factor. Lee, who is an elderly woman, I changed my mind.
