He is also a perfect example the ability to improve. For example, he was initially weak and barely got out of the Shire without the help of Maggot and Bombadil. Also, it took him some three weeks before he was ready to leave for Mordor (Tolkien 44) He is not linked to any form of glory as opposed to Aragon and Gandalf. His task was a great one and this was perceived (by his trusty companion, Sam as well as the elves) – one on which the entire world depended. Elrond had noted this when in a piercing glance he told Frodo he was convinced the task was appointed for him and that if he did not find a way, no one would(Tolkien 175) In essence Frodo is a unique hero, one worthy of emulation and a perfect example for those who given a great responsibility, shrink realizing their own inadequacies, yet knowing what hangs in the balance, realize that they cannot fail.

When Frodo had to leave the Shire, he was quick to point out to his friends who were eager to accompany him that the journey would be a perilous one, and one they would rather not undertake. Besides he was forever concerned about the Ring drawing the Dark Riders and putting his company in danger. He points out he rather starves along with his friends on a recreational walk around the Shire than take them along on his life-threatening journey. He would rather himself, but not his friend in danger (Tolkien 58). Frodo is responsible. Frodo is shrewd. This was part of the reason why he found so much favor with Bilbo Baggins. It is noteworthy that he realized the bad bargain prices were on account of his relation to the Sackville-Bagginses.

His shrewdness was instrumental in his long journey to Mordor where the order of the day was constant inadequacies(Tolkien 59), including food that the Hobbits valued exceedingly (pg 30), and danger both from the Dark Riders and the environment(Tolkien 70). When Merry alerts him of having adequately prepared for the journey ahead, he appreciates the ponies but notes that they wouldn’t guarantee safety and that it would be wiser to wait for Gandalf(Tolkien 71). At least a little more comfortable. Later these friendly ties made early proved useful when Legolas killed many an Orc in their defense and fought alongside them; not forgetting Aragorn He is affectionate. This was very apparent is the manners of the young Hobbit. Frodo’s affection was felt in his close circle as well as with those he casually interacted.

This is illustrated by the friendship between him and his fellow hobbits such as Merry and Pippin and certain aspects of his affectionate nature can be seen in his relation with Maggot and Bombadil as well as with Old Ham Gamgee and his youngest son, Sam Gamgee – their neighbors. He endured the stress of the long journey to the mountain(Tolkien 81), enduring hunger, the danger, the injury. Frodo had a mighty struggle deep inside him that tolled heavily on him and to all this, he said to himself "I will do now what I must” (Tolkien 258). Often times he felt like he was could take no more(pg 83, 256 ), but he pressed on with encouragement from his friend Sam, realizing that utmost control of self was needed when responsibility or greater good was at stake.
