Firstly, the rise of a numerous number of service sector jobs in the developed nations has overtime attracted a numerous number of casual laborers and particularly women from the developing nations. This hence promotes immigration of women and hence causing family separation, as women are forced to leave their children under the guard of extended family, or the father. In the case where the immigration is initiated by the father, the mother may follow suit after some time and hence also leaving the children under the care of extended family. A mother, however, plays a significant role in a child’s life and hence her presence proves to be very paramount. Children may also end up seeking parental love and affection as a result of their parents’ absence. The author describes the feeling like that of a stinging scorpion.

“I felt I had a kind of scorpion inside me that was stinging my heart again and again”, which describes in other words of the sharp pain caused by the separation from parents. In most cases, children feel abandoned when the parents and ought to seek parental love and affection when parents leave them with extended family to attend to work abroad. Children may face discrimination and torture from the extended family members and may also be loaded with a numerous number of household chores. This may negatively impact the welfare and performance at school and other important areas. This is because of the language barrier and the difficulty of learning the new language. These hardships emotionally separate Reyna and her siblings from their parents, and ideally keeps the parents out of the siblings’ lives.

Mexican immigrants face various forms of discrimination in America, among them being racial discrimination. The immigrants may first stay in immigration camps which are not very decent and hence are exposed to misery in the new country. Also, they attain only the lower paying jobs which then provides inadequate money for family upkeep given the high standards of living in the United States. Also, the immigrants only achieve the lower paying jobs which may not earn the families enough money for upkeep given the relatively high living standards in the United States. The fact that the father abuses the mother and the children by cheating, drinking and beating them further generates dissatisfaction and hence widens the gap between the nuclear family members. Abuse hence has a negative implication on family functionality and bond.

This hence promotes inadequate parental affection on the part of the children, especially since distance separates the children from their mother who is a very significant figure in their lives. Body IV The book has, however, a capturing ending. It can also be derived that illegal immigration plays a vital role in increasing misery both on the part of the siblings and parents, as increased friction and pressure from the new environment leads to action such as discrimination and abuse. The book, however, is important in asserting knowledge on various experiences faced by immigrants and what it takes for the immigrants to handle the situations. The book “The Distance Between Us" directly relates to the theme in the sense that it asserts on the impact of physical distance in aggravating the family distance and bonds.
