Grit and college success

In her video “Grit,” Angela Duckworth reveals that there are numerous ways to establish develop, in addition to assisting other people to demonstrate grit. Further, in a profile presented by LA Times in “South L. A. Students Finds a Different World at UC Berkeley,” Kashawn Campbell shows that he has obtained the significance of developing grit. The reason for this perspective he shows he prepared to face risk, engage in challenging activities and work diligently to deal with risks. Even though Campbell did not follow a similar context of reading motivational articles and magazines, he engaged in various ways that helped him to develop grit in his life. In his high school life, Kashawn Campbell depicted positivity towards grit. Showing passion in his studies aligns with the points of view illustrated by Duckworth that being passionate is a significant channel towards success.

Similar perspectives are presented by Streeter who reveals that Campbell focused on succeeding as an A student (para. The element of outside support to achieve grit is presented through the fact that Campbell has a supportive caretaker (Sylvia) and a loving mother who kept on encouraging him to believe in himself to achieve success. This statement implies that it would have been difficult for Campbell to qualify for UC Berkeley without believing that human traits in terms of intellectual outcomes can be depicted via personal effort. It also shows that Campbell’s efforts in high school paid off by making him make it into UC Berkeley. In paragraph 26, Streeter supports the same perspectives by noting how Campbell continued to recognize the role played by grit through how he interacted with his classmates.

At other times, Campbell would doubt his preparedness for college. This triggered depression because of the thought of ill-preparedness. This aligns with how Campbell sought advice from various people on how he would deal with the challenging studies. This is a clear indication that outside support is pivotal to enable students succeed, in addition to grit. I can relate this to my own experience because having read different motivational articles, I understood that people usually feel frustrated after failing to achieve their targets at first. This is relatable to Duckworth’s perspective of grit in that people have to embrace it by practicing frequently. Frequent and deliberate practice helps to equip people with the necessary grit they need to deal with the challenge of failure. This is relatable to Campbell’s experience because he was not a top performer since he joined school, but it was a process.
