They believe that if you are hiring the best, you don’t need to force them to sit and do what they have already been told to do. Above all the company provides its employees with a list of amenities including laundry services, massage, and games. The employees are free to leave the office to go drop their clothes any time for laundry or go and play some darts at any time. Compensation is done through stack reviews. The way the company treats the employees has contributed greatly to motivating them. Policies direct employees on what is expected of them at the workplace and how to handle issues.

A lack of them causes uncertainty on how to handle issues and dissatisfaction that could ruin individual performance. 2 Group factors At Valve, there are a number of projects that employees work on. Individuals are free to join any team they feel has the most returning projects. Employees vote on the projects to work on and these projects must have value to the company. Each project team creates a job description that helps to meet the goals of the group. The job description is temporal and can change depending on the requirements. The job descriptions help the team members to know what to expect from each other. It is important for teams to have a clear description of the vision or goals that they want to achieve.

Without a vision, a team cannot go far and they cannot accomplish what they want. In every team, there is a need to have a leader who will hold meetings regularly with the members to discuss the progress of the team so as to make changes where necessary. Lack of such a meeting means that the group will never know what they are doing right and where there are faults which could lead to failure of the projects. In addition, there is a need to have a team leader that will solve conflicts in the team. In the stages of group formation, the storming stage is characterized by conflicts within the group (Hiriyappa, 2009). If there is no one to solve these conflicts just like at Valve, the group cannot achieve its goals.

Hiring the best candidates means that the individuals can perform their job duties very well and push the company to increase their productivity. At Valve, they only hire talented individuals who have helped them succeed at creating games that satisfy what their customers want. According to Fayol’s 14 principles of management, the division of labor was identified as an important factor. Division of labor is the breaking down of a task into small tasks. Each individual is then assigned a task according to their skills (Terry &Franklin, 1997). Organizational structures help individuals in a company to understand what their roles are and the roles of others as well. The “no structure” method adopted by Valve to some extent acts as a motivator to the employees.
