Learning of Social Conventions in Children through Behaviors

Document Type:Research Paper

Subject Area:Psychology

Document 1

This observation is categorically coined in the aspects of people being able to observe and learn from other people’s attitudes, behaviors and the results of those specific behaviors. In most cases, people will tend to emulate the actions that have ever been done by others and results were seen other than doing things that they have never seen the results, (Zhao, Baron, & Hamlin, 2006). Therefore, in this research study, the focus will be directed in determining how do children learn social conventions through observations and analysis of appropriate behaviors. The research will be based on the Bandura modeling theory and Kohlberg moral development theory. This is a research study that involved qualitative data collection and presentation as well as analysis and discussion based on previous research studies and literature.

19 children were between the age of 3-5, 17 children were between the age of 6-9 and 17 children were between the age of 10-12. The age difference helped in collecting data from a wide range of age-related behavior. The participants of the study were observed for their age-related behavioral patterns and individual moral difference and development. The observation was done in a public setting and the specific places that the behaviors were being observed were in restaurants, shopping malls, playgrounds, and parks. The specific behavioral patterns that were of interest were emotional regulation, imitation and learning, interaction, sharing, and adolescent friendship. The reason behind is that most of the parents were engrossed in their mobile devices and computers thus affecting the sociability of the children.

Parents that were social to others especially in the supermarkets and restaurants while ordering some items or asking for services, had children that socialized with other children and obeyed people. This learning phenomenon has been identified and discussed in the Bandura modeling theory, (McLeod, 2008).

Bandura modeling theory states that people learn through observation, imitation, and modeling. On the other hand, abilities of a kid being a loner were minimal since most of the parents were engaging their children in talks and other children influenced bonding with the participants which is a normal gesture, (Zhao, Baron, & Hamlin, 2006). However, children at the age of 10-12 are likely to disobey rules due to peer pressure and physiological change during their adolescent period. This research study is directly linked with the model and theories from other literature. Children are able to learn and behave like others who have been observed behaving like so before, (Zhao, Baron, & Hamlin, 2006). As argued by Bandura, modeling of character is based on early learning and imitation processes that the child is introduced too, (McLeod, 2008).
