The need for new graduate nurse to manage patient needs, family and coordinate the interprofessional teams poses increased distress. This assignment will discuss the transition to practice for new newly graduated nurse, challenges, impact, and nurse residency programs as a solution to ensuring a successful transition to practice. Factors Influencing Transition to Practice There are a number of issues that are exerted on the new nurse graduates that impact negatively their transition to practice. One of the most significant factors contributing to difficulties in transition for new graduate nurses is the gap between training and practice. Theoretical training and clinical practice are often different experiences and new graduates. Clinical practices are at an increased oversight and reduced reimbursements which demand nurses to be ready to provide high-quality patient care from the first go.

New nurses faced with increased difficulties in their transition to practice, report more negative safety practices and increased patient errors according to (NCSBN, 2019). Increased patient errors in care negatively impact on patient’s experiences and outcomes of care resulting in reduced insurance reimbursements, increased overheads in patient care and negative hospital ratings. Why Is Effective Transition Important? Effective transition of new nurse graduates into practice is crucial in ensuring that the investment in nurse training results in the increased nursing workforce. The nursing shortage is increasing with increased nursing demand making it imperative to ensure positive transitions of nurses from into practice. Nurse residency programs compared to the traditional nurse work orientation programs provide more benefits to newly graduated nurses through enabling them to experience and utilize reflection and critical reasoning in building confidence in making critical decisions.

The nurse residency programs act as a bridge to the practice-preparation gap through establishing competencies in new nurses that the nurses may not have gained during their training period (Hansen, 2014). New nurses undergoing the nurse residency programs are equipped with skills to interpret and utilize clinical reasoning in practice as well as the use of evidence-based practice, navigation the healthcare political structures to enhance patient safety among others. Residency programs hence provide new graduates with a supportive environment that allows them to cope with the intricacies and demands for practice in the practice environment and improves coping through the transition period. Evidence has shown that the nurse residency programs contributed positively towards enhancing the transition of nurses into practice. In summary, the transition to practice for newly graduated nurses is an imperative factor towards managing the biting nursing shortages.

The effective transition is essential not only in reducing attrition of nurses from practice but also in ensuring human resources for health costs such as costs due to nurse turnover are reduced to enhance the financial wellbeing of healthcare organizations. The nursing residency program lasting between 3-28 months is key as a solution to ensuring a seamless transition to practice. The program has among others accrued benefits in ensuring staff retention and reduction of turnovers as well improved patient safety. Despite the success, funding support for these programs is critical to ensuring sustainability and success of the programs.
