If a person’s actions inspire other people to learn more dreams more, do more or become more; then he or she is a leader (Grint, 24). The definition of a leader can also be found in the acronyms of the word itself where we can say a leader is one who; • Listens keenly and with the utmost respect • Empathizes without any pretense • Asks questions but keep secrets • Dares each one to get out of his/her comfort zones • Enables others to achieve their full potential • Responds but never reacts. A manager, on the other hand, is a person in charge of a certain part of a company or group of duties and tasks. Managers have a group of people (staff) reporting to them.

A manager is responsible for running a subset or the entire business organization and has a responsibility for administering and controlling an organization or staff (Burns, 78). A leader, on the other hand, must be humble by not looking for credits but instead should be giving credit. An effective leader treats people with care, must inspire the team, must be fearless, must be a master delegator, must be honest, must be confident and above all must be a good communicator. Leadership is all about motivating, influencing and inspiring the people. a leader coaches and develops people treat them with utmost respect but at the same time challenges them to achieve their full potential. A leader seeks to create stronger teams, with individuals committed to an organization’s goals.

The CEO is regarded as an excellent leader who motivates his working team and focuses more on the customer. Mr. Tery recognizes the important link between customers and employees. He has a philosophy that treating the employees well enhances the quality of the production. Mr. Each manager is allocated distinct functions and duties by the line manager on duty. Functions of a manager A manager thinks strategically and delivers creative decisions to the problems the organization faces so as to ensure a successful achievement of the organization’s vision, objectives and goals. Both classical and modern management theories segment the functions of a manager into five major categories; planning, organizing, directing, staffing and controlling. The company’s management monitors all the organizational activities which ensure that they comply with the policies of the organization. Staffing Managers of Tesco UK ensures the company always have the best-qualified people in specific positions and ensures there is no shortage or excess of employees which would otherwise jeopardize the company’s organizational structure and success. He focused his energy on achieving the company’s vision and mission. The company aims to continue being the top retail market in the UK and across the globe and has clearly set long-term objectives and goals to be achieved with the help of its effective leaders. The company’s mission is to continue to offer to its internal and external customers by doing to them the little but important things.

The Company’s mission statement states that “Every little helps”. The company’s leaders are tasked with the responsibility of motivating the team to ensure it delivers on the company’s mission and vision. Contingency leadership model encourages flexibility of the management, values opinions of employees, make everyone a leader and offers flexibility in the structure of the tasks (Grint, 102). This approach, however, lacks adequate literature about it, is quite complex to implement, is difficult to test empirically and is quite reactive and not proactive. Leadership styles Democratic, autocratic and leissez faire are the three common leadership style. Tesco UK has a democratic leadership style which focuses on the inclusion of all the employees in the decision-making process. All the actions taken by the leaders are governed by the decisions collectively made by the employees, which highly motivates them.
