The last chapters of the novel are connected to the overall theme of conflict of identity. In the last chapters, the Beetle acts as a colonized figure demonstrating the horrors that were brought by imperialism (Dove 9) Moreover, the Beetle depicts the British anxieties that surround issues of gender while reflecting on the exploitative actions of the British subjects as it challenges their concepts of gender roles in the Victorian society. Sexual dominance of the Beetle triggers terror in its victims, the desire to dominate sexually as well as the need to carry our sexual exploitations in males though deviant fails to challenge gender norms in the Victorian culture. This is because the Victorian society accepts male sexuality as the dominant sex.
