The Romantic and Victorian Literature Analysis

The romantic age is the literary period that is dated between the late 18th century and the first third of the 19thy century. On the other hand, Victorian age refers to the later section of the nineteenth century that marked the reign of Queen Victoria. Both eras had unique traits that emanated from the social, economic and political spheres in the country (“Victorian Literature. Consequently, specific features were used by the artist to portray the imagery in the different form of literature and art. The changes in the English society in the romantic and the Victorian literary periods influenced the changes like creativity and the modes used to express the artistic ideas that existed in the respective eras. For example, both eras had a biased society that favored the male gender than the female one.

Moreover, the social-political events that ensued in these periods are featured by the artists in poetry, art, and other literary work (Forward 17). These occurrences include the colonization of different parts of the world that had a crucial impact on the English society and also the political transitions in the entire Europe continent. The other poetic features such as the styles and rhyme were maintained in both era and thus signifies another similarity. Therefore, it is evident that there were a coherence and direct relationship in the poetry of the two eras despite the presence of some differences. The painting is based on the ancient tale of Sardanapalus of Assyria and is referred to as The Death of Sardanapalus. This artwork illustrates a death scene where many people are dying from different wounds and caused by either the person or another individual.

Therefore, the emotional and individualistic traits that are characteristic in the romanticism are observable. Figure Two Figure 2 gives insight into various characteristics of the Victorian era that differ significantly from the portraits of romanticism. The painting uses an elegant setting that portrays wealth, urbanity and other factors of the modern life such as fashion (Shrimpton & Butler 7). Satire was also paramount in his poems which contrasted different aspects of the society including the political stands. Moreover, the influence of spiritual beliefs was evident in his work and linked them to the radical topics of the social life like child labor and the repressive nature of the government and the church. His collection, “Songs of Innocence and Experience” has numerous compositions that illustrate all the aspects of romanticism.

On the other hand, the Victorian era music was also coherent with the literary transformations of this period. The saloons provided the venue for the development of entertainment music in the country. Moreover, the glees were noted to have limited contrapuntal activities. The social and political aspects of the society shaped the romantic and Victorian literature significantly. Specific features differentiate the two periods while others bring out the differences. The emotional expressions and consideration of nature and the spiritual aspects are paramount in the romantic literature.
