Based on their past experiences, some of these items may cause some trauma or upset for students who have been exposed to similar occurrences in the past. It is because of this that in many of the institutions, the students have raised the request to be informed of any likely damage in the materials before they can be exposed to them. It is in this case that the trigger warnings become important to the student population to avoid further damage on the mental and psychological health of the students who have been subjected to similar traumatic experiences before. In her article on the trigger warnings, Jennifer Medina indicates that most of the college students in the spring have been intensively involved in the making of a request that any learning materials with gory images or pictures or even incidences of racism or violence should first warn them about it so that they are aware and in a position to know the best way to handle themselves and the contents as they read or view them.

In particular, she points out to the fact that many of them have requested to have their sense of judgment trusted by the students in the way that they should not be worried about the contents that they have prepared to use in class. In this regard, they state that the requests that are being made by the students are provocative as they indicate the lack of the ability by the professors to use their common sense while portraying the different contents in the materials. Besides this, Medina attempts to express the displeasure of the professors who contend that with the request for the trigger warnings, the students at the universities suggest that the institutions are so fragile to the extent that they are not in a position to embrace the varied aspects in the society but make a lot of effort to challenge.

It is mainly because of the elicited conflict between the university professors and the students that this debate has been publicized in a wide range of areas that include the magazines and the newspapers. Thus, they should be exposed to a wide range of situations that make them ready to handle the different circumstances that especially relate to their course details. In the article, it is indicated that “and that your students have lives before and outside your classroom, experiences you may not expect or understand” (6). Therefore, although most of what has been presented by Medina is true with regard to the preparation of the students and their prevention of having to deal with hard material, it still has in downsize in the way that it will deny them the chance to get information about the real importance and value of being offended.
