The Hamlet by William Shakespeare and the Oedipus the King by Sophocles are kind of literature books that are authored in a manner that the reader will always want to read the book till the last page. Thanks to the creativity and incorporation of different writing styles by the authors. The two books draw a similarity between them by having some common themes among them. The authors have had the theme of tragedy well represented in their literary works. Tragedy can be said to be a situation, a phenomenon or a happening that causes massive suffering to people. The play was plotted in Denmark where Hamlet's father was the king. Claudius the uncle of Hamlet decided to kill the king so that he could ascend to power without following the right way of power transition.

The play begins where Prince Hamlet is recalled back to attend his father's burial from Germany where he was studying. Hamlet arrived home to find out that his father had been killed and his mother already married by his uncle Claudius who had already made himself the king of Denmark instead of passing the crown to Prince Hamlet. With the events that he witnessed after his arrival, Hamlet suspected that there was a foul play that was being orchestrated on him. The first to be killed was Polonius who was sent to spy on Hamlet and his mother in the private chamber of the queen. Hamlet gets punished by Claudius by getting sent to England (Ryan). Guildenstern and Rosencrantz were sent to spy on Hamlet by Claudius and he instructed them to get Hamlet on England’s king hands so that he could be executed (Ryan).

On learning this, Hamlet instead planned for the murder of the two by hanging. Ophelia, whose father was hanged by Hamlet gets depressed about the issue and drowns in a river while singing sad songs (Shakespeare et al. On his return, Creon informs the King that the only way to end the plague was to find the murderer and punish him. (Sophocles et al, Zelenak) Oedipus is accused by the blind prophet Tiresias who goes further to give prophesy of a marriage that would be incestuous. The queen, Jocasta tells the king to pay no attention to the prophecy since she heard a prophecy that her late husband would die in the hands of their own son. Jocasta claims that the prophecy didn’t not happen because Lauis was killed by robbers and their son had already died.

On learning this from Jocasta the queen, Oedipus becomes stressed because he knows that he had killed a man that looked like King Lauis. The greediness of the Hamlet’s uncle Claudius is the one that provokes the tragedy that occurs within the play. The pain, pressure and the ghost’s advice that appears to Hamlet forces him to embark on a mission to revenge against his uncle Claudius. On his plan to kill Claudius, he ends up killing six other people on the process. He himself dies and his mother too.
