Research indicates that a breadwinner is any individual,. in a single family, responsible for coming up with relevant means of generating an incoming which is meant to support the members of the household1. Although the mean and women may have respective means of generating an income, a household may only have one breadwinner. In such a case, a breadwinner may be identified based on how much one makes. For instance, if one of the two members has a more profitable income than the other, then he/she automatically undertakes the roles of a breadwinner in an attempt to support the livelihood of the family in question. This case mostly involves families who are composed of children who are18 years and below.

This is estimated to be a quadruple of the number of women acting as breadwinners back in 1960. As such, this indicates the shift in family dynamics in the present age. Today, it is expected and acceptable for women who are married to take an active part in the employment sector. Similarly, women are expected to ensure that they can play the role of caregivers to their children as well as husbands. Research indicates that, by 2007, about 20% of women (mostly mothers) acknowledged that they were willing to work as their primary means of supporting their families. Additionally, this number rose by 32% in the preceding year. Although this might be the case, debates still exist on whether a mother should take part in the workforce or not.

A significant number of the public bears a varied opinion about whether mothers should stay at home to care for their family members or enter into the employment market. Regardless of critics’ reasoning, it is pivotal for women to earn a living as this is likely to enable them to have a relevant means of supporting their family. As such, men are not exceeded to share their emotions so. Instead, they ought to ensure that they keep them to themselves. Since the man is the head of a household, he is expected to make more money than the woman. In instances where the woman makes more money the man, this may be considered to be a problem. Most societies often tend to equate money with power5.

This follows years of limited opportunities for women. As such, relevant authorities continue to come up with adequate policies inclined towards coming up with adequate means of ensuring that all people can enjoy equitable opportunities in society regardless of their gender. Current Context In modern society, men have become accustomed to the idea of women playing an active role in the employment field. Women have also sought to work in varied industries in ranging from white collar jobs to blue-collar ones. In such cases, both men and women ought to be equal amounts regarding the salary paid to them. This may be as a result of the lowered ego of the man as this makes them feel as they are the inferior between the two parties.

This may adversely affect the relationship between the two making it particularly difficult for them to come up into an agreement as to how they should run their household. This indicates a state of gender inequality more so against women since it is considered to be unconventional for women to be financially stable as compared to how much a man should be earning. Today, a significant number of women often tend to focus on their careers before deciding on getting married or even bearing any children. This technique is mostly aimed at allowing them to achieve economic stability. If only the woman is present, then she would be required to act as both the caregiver to the children, if present, and ensure that she provides for them despite the fact of whether she is used to doing so or not.

Such situations often present a set of challenges because economic conditions continue to change from time to time hence making it difficult for such women to find an opportunity where she is likely to earn a living that may help her to sustain herself as well as her children. Alternatively, men are more likely to find ease in coming up with relevant means of earning a living because they are likely to venture into distinct fields in the vastly male-dominated employment field. Men may, on the other hand, find it difficult to issue emotional support to his children. This is mostly since men are not always likely to possess such skills. Also, personalities such as Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s chief operating officer, and Kamala Harris, California Senator have also come front to address issues of gender inequality about payment disparities.

The purpose behind this movement has been having been to allow women to find out relevant means of allowing women to earn an income in a similar level compared to that earned by men in similar working positions11. Conclusion The debate on who should be the rightful breadwinner continues to gain significant attention over the years. Traditionally, men were perceived to be stronger and head of the family hence making it necessary for them to come up with relevant means of making a living in order to support their wives and children.
