Why is speed an important factor in reading development

People invest effort and time in special education programs that they can improve their reading skills and abilities. Most of the school children have a problem in trying to read at a faster rate. Speed helps in word recognition skill and sight word reading skill. The sight word reading skill helps in the development of decoding skills in school children. Sight word reading skill speeds up the decoding process in school children. Increase in spelling and reading skills both in writing and orally enables the children to comprehend and express themselves in academic contexts. Speed of processing leads to the development of expressive and receptive skills. Most of the children have a problem in writing skills, reading comprehension, reading fluency and the cognitive processes that is helpful in the development of reading skills.

Speed is an important factor that enables the development of word-based reading skills such as decoding, word recognition and phonological awareness that form part of the central processing. Complex processes form part of the acquisition of literacy skills and language. Therefore this is connected in noticing and detecting basic sounds and blends of the sound. These sounds are the ones that make words and are known as phonemes. Another underlying ability is understanding the meaning of the words. As you understand what a word means it will bring efficiency in reading.
