They are also known as fibromas, or uterine myomas which consists of firm compact tumors made up of fibrous connective tissues and smooth muscle cells that grow in the uterus. Fibroids and abnormal uterine bleeding can have serious health effects on the body of a woman especially those who happen to be pregnant or have just given birth (Behera 3). Research shows that about 20 to 50 percent of women in the reproductive age have fibroids, though most have not been diagnosed. The risk of developing fibroids results from being pregnant, increased body weight, being over 30 years and African America. Abnormal uterine bleeding is the most common symptom of a fibroid and is caused by mainly by pregnancy. The major cause of fibroids is hormones.

Hormones, estrogen and progesterone are produced by the ovaries can make the inner uterine lining to regenerate at every menstrual cycle and may stimulate the development of fibroids (Keehbauch, et al. Family history can also contribute to the development of fibroids. Therefore, if the mother, grandmother or sister suffered from the condition then there is a high probability that the daughter will have fibroids. Due to the high production of estrogen and progesterone during pregnancy fibroids get to grow and mature at a rapid rate. Lastly, development of fibroids may be felt through enlargement of the abdomen and fullness or pressure in the lower abdomen region. Proper and efficient diagnosis require the services of a qualified gynecologist to conduct a pelvic exam.
