When families welcomes children with special needs, the pressure to act right by them, to support them and ensure they’re happy and fulfilled could weigh in making it a very challenging journey. Their educational, recreational, social and even financial requirements could result into crisis and neglect of the other children which could have adverse results on the entire family. However, with the necessary training and resources, the experience could be easier and less emotionally trying to adjust to. This makes it necessary for the creation of supportive seminars and programs for families who have children with special needs. Educators in institutions that admit children with special needs also require certain levels of knowledge on how to act and treat the children.

c) Creating a forum for discussion on the situation- This helps the other children to table their fears and worries. The parents should also try to explain the situation as clearly as they can to the children in order to take away any feelings of guilt or self-doubt due to the decline in attention. d) Focusing on the positive- Growing up with children who have developmental issue makes children to be more compassionate and patient (Krueger 2018). This in itself is a positive which should bring calm and joy to a family rather than focusing on the negatives. e) Treating the children as equally as possible- Preferential treatment to the special child could make the siblings resentful or create bad blood between them.

Unless it is their own child, it is important that the educators take time to fit into the parents’ or caregivers shoes and not infringe on their roles. The teacher should learn to understand the other person’s perspective in the same. Family involvement in the learning process of a child with special needs When a child with special needs starts going to school, it is important for the school to create ways in which the child’s family can play a role in their education. This goes a long way in ensuring the fulfillment of both the parents and the child. The parents are able to feel involved while the children feel valued and attended to. Support resources for families with special needs children Families which have children with special needs may require professional help or support shoulders of people who have undergone similar ordeals as a form of encouragement.

The following websites and addresses are resources available within the country providing the above mentioned services. • Parent to parent support websites and landlines (Center for children with special needs, 2018) A majority of these groups consist of parents whose children have similar needs. This enables them to encourage and support each other. If one parent contacts the website, they are connected to another parent who has a child with a similar diagnosis. Conclusion In conclusion, Families with special needs children do require emotional support by the society. Schools have a huge role to play in helping theses parents to cope with their children’s situation. They also need to adapt to the sudden changes that can be witnessed within the family due to a child’s developmental disability.
